Back in the day when home-made was the only-made, a little boy grew up on a high country farm with his grandmother, a salt-of-the-earth type, quick to laugh with a mischievous twinkle in her eye, and a heart of solid gold.
The garden was their pantry and the gun their provider, the kitchen became his playground, as well as his classroom, where life-lessons and value systems where instilled, by daily examples set for him.
Everything that came through the back door graced the weathered wooden kitchen table, in some way, shape or form. Nothing was wasted, and everything devoured!
From these humble beginnings, armed with an appetite and a side step rare in a flanker of the day, he set out to discover the world beyond the orchard and back-block paddocks he knew so well.
He went on to become quite the flash chef, training in France’s big smoke, Paris, as well as doing stints in America, Southern Africa and South East Asia. He came back to flex his culinary muscle at the helm of a world famous lodge , nestled on the shores of a volcanic lake near a big mountain, and for several years cooked for European royalty, A-list Hollywood types and local legends, as well as his kids at home.
Other iconic eateries followed, all over the country, but he never let it go to his head, and stayed true to the essence of giving what he had learned from his grandmother, for no reason other than to share in the pure joy it brought.
